Winter in Missouri can bring freezing temps, snow, and ice—and that means it’s time to cozy up and be a little extra mindful around the house. As a renter, you’re not responsible for the big-ticket stuff, but there are a few smart habits that can protect your home, your comfort, and even your wallet.
Here’s what you need to know to keep things running smoothly through the winter months:
🌡 Keep the Heat On (Even When You’re Away)
Going out of town? Leave your heat on at a minimum of 55°F to prevent pipes from freezing. Frozen pipes can burst—and that’s a major mess for everyone. We’ll handle the repairs, but prevention is best!
🚿 Let Faucets Drip in Freezing Weather
When temps dip below 20°F, let a few faucets drip slowly, especially overnight. This keeps water moving and helps prevent pipe freeze-ups.
💧 Disconnect Garden Hoses from Outdoor Faucets
Before the deep cold hits, make sure all garden hoses are removed from exterior spigots. A connected hose can trap water inside the faucet and cause it to freeze, which can damage the faucet and the pipes inside the wall. Quick task now, big headache avoided later.
🚪 Seal Out Drafts
If you feel a cold breeze sneaking in under doors or windows, let us know! In the meantime, rolled-up towels or door draft stoppers are a renter-friendly fix.
🔌 Be Safe with Space Heaters
If you use a space heater, make sure it’s plugged directly into a wall outlet (not an extension cord) and is kept away from curtains, bedding, or anything flammable. Never leave it on when you’re asleep or not home.
🧯 Test Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Winter means more indoor heating and less fresh air. Take a minute to test your alarms and replace batteries if needed. If any detectors are missing or not working, contact us right away.
🧹 Clear Ice and Snow (If That’s in Your Lease)
If your lease includes snow and ice removal, please keep walkways and driveways clear. Use salt to help prevent slips. If we’re handling it, don’t worry—we’ve got it covered.
